Definition
- "A performance task is any learning activity or assessment that asks students to perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency. Performance tasks yield a tangible product and/or performance that serve as evidence of learning. Unlike a selected-response item (e.g., multiple-choice or matching) that asks students to select from given alternatives, a performance task presents a situation that calls for learners to apply their learning in context" (para. 1). - Performance Task Blog Series # 1 – What is a performance task? – McTighe & Associates

💡 Consider using the G.R.A.S.P.S. framework for designing a performance task. A performance task is meant to address the Six facets of understanding (see also Question prompts based on the six facets of understanding).

G.R.A.S.P. Framework explanation
The GRASPS framework is a tool for designing performance tasks that are authentic, engaging, and meaningful for students. It is an acronym for:
- Goal: What is the purpose of the task? What knowledge and skills will students demonstrate?
- Role: What role will students play in the task? Who are they working for or with?
- Audience: Who is the audience for the task? Who will be using the product or performance?
- Situation: What is the context of the task? Where and when does it take place?
- Product/Performance: What will students create or produce? What will they do?
- Standards/Criteria: How will students be assessed? What are the success criteria?
The GRASPS framework can be used to design performance tasks in any subject area. Here is an example of a GRASPS task for a science class:
Goal: Students will design and conduct an experiment to test the effects of different types of fertilizer on plant growth.
Role: Students will be scientists.
Audience: The audience for the experiment is the class and the teacher.
Situation: The experiment will take place in the school garden.
Product/Performance: The product of the experiment will be a written report that describes the results of the experiment and the conclusions that can be drawn from them.
Standards/Criteria: The students will be assessed on their ability to design a valid experiment, collect and analyze data, and draw conclusions.
